“Could be the next Marc Jacobs”- Paul Cavazza on customer service. Part 4

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

“Could be the next Marc Jacobs!”

DSCF3552“Don’t get me wrong,” Paul Cavazza confided “I like working with seasoned professionals, because as a businessman, I appreciate that everything is going to run smoothly, by the book.” But he lights up when he talks about working with new designers who are still learning. Although they might not know the complexities of the fashion process, and might not have pieces ready like a full cutter’s must or knowing what a grainline is, teaching them about the process “is the fun part of my job.” He tells how three up and coming British designers first approached him with a jeans pattern they had sketched onto brown paper bags. Guiding them through the process, he remembers, and seeing their successes, was exhilarating.

DSCF3560The thrill of teaching and helping a designer be successful is only part of his conscientious work to give every customer the utmost respect. “I look at it, like, I don’t know who’s walking through the door. It could be the next Marc Jacobs or Nanette Lepore walking through the door, so I treat everybody as if they’re the next big thing, with care and respect.”

Almost as if to illustrate that point, during our talk, a customer who needed his guidance arrived, and he asked to continue the interview later, so that he could give her the advice and excellent customer service she needed.
