About
For years, Brandon Graham was perplexed by the way fashion industry professionals kept their knowledge compartmentalized, with the tailor focusing on fit and fabric; the assistant designer working in Illustrator and surrounded by tech packs; the tech designer preserving the bottom line by making sure the pattern fits together in the most efficient way; and designers not knowing how their sketches and dreams will translate to what people buy. Nobody he asked could satisfy his curiosity about the practical steps in transforming a sketch into a marketable reality.
It used to be easier for fashion industry professionals to work together and communicate. There has been a transition in the fashion world. Independent companies contract to do work once done by in-house sample rooms and patternmakers. Fashion education has changed as well. Today, very few designers or design students have seen the inside of a factory, nor do they really understand the factory’s role in making garments. Shows like America’s Top Model and Project: Runway ignite the popular imagination with a glamorous (but one-sided) view of fashion.
PinkyShears.com came out of a series of conversations with fashion industry professionals sharing their stories, and building the larger, interconnected picture of the fashion world and the realities of manufacture and design.
